What this rotate and flip tool does

Use it to turn a picture to the correct orientation or to mirror it. One-click buttons rotate by 90 degrees left or right, turn the image upside down with 180 degrees, or flip it horizontally and vertically. For crooked scans and tilted horizons, enter any angle between minus 180 and 180 degrees and the canvas expands so no corner is cut off. A live preview shows the first image, and your chosen transformation is applied to every file you add, so a whole folder of sideways scans can be fixed in one go.

When to use it

  • Fixing a photo that shows sideways or upside down in a program that ignores camera orientation.
  • Straightening a slightly tilted scan or horizon with a small custom angle.
  • Mirroring a selfie back to how it appeared in the real world, or flipping artwork for a transfer print.
  • Preparing a consistent set of product or document images before uploading them.

Good to know before you save

Rotation by multiples of 90 degrees is lossless in terms of pixels: nothing is resampled, only rearranged. Any other angle requires interpolation and adds empty triangles at the corners. Those corners are transparent in PNG and WebP, and filled with your chosen background colour in JPG. If you intend to crop the straightened picture, use PNG for the intermediate step to avoid double compression.

Flipping and rotating interact in a way that can confuse. The buttons here always act on what you see: pressing "Flip horizontal" mirrors the picture left to right as it currently appears, even after you have rotated it. If you get lost, press Reset and start again. Modern cameras store a rotation hint in the file instead of turning the pixels; this tool reads that hint, shows the picture the way a phone gallery would, and writes the result with the pixels already upright, so it displays correctly everywhere.

Worked example: turning and straightening a 4000 × 3000 scan

A 4000 × 3000 scan that came out sideways needs a quarter turn. Press Rotate right 90° and the result is 3000 × 4000: width and height swap and no pixel is resampled. Now take a scan that is slightly tilted. Enter 5 degrees and the canvas grows to 4246 × 3337 so no corner is cut off; the new corner triangles are white in a JPG (the default background) and transparent in PNG or WebP. If you press Rotate right 90° and then Flip horizontal, the result row describes the change as rotated -90°, mirrored. With the output left on Same as original, scan.jpg is saved as scan-edited.jpg.

Privacy: nothing is uploaded

All rotation and flipping happens inside your browser with the canvas API. The pictures never travel to a server, which keeps scans of documents, identity papers and private photos on your device. Once the page has loaded the tool also works offline.

Frequently asked questions

How do I rotate a photo 90 degrees?

Add the photo and press "Rotate right 90°" or "Rotate left 90°". Download the result when the preview looks correct.

Why is my picture sideways on some devices but not others?

Cameras often save a hidden orientation flag instead of rotating the pixels. Some programs honour it and others ignore it. Saving through this tool bakes the correct orientation into the pixels.

Can I rotate by a custom angle?

Yes. Enter an angle between -180 and 180 degrees. The image is enlarged to fit, and the new corners are transparent for PNG and WebP or the chosen colour for JPG.

What is the difference between rotating and flipping?

Rotating turns the picture around its centre, while flipping creates a mirror image. A flipped photo cannot be reproduced by rotation alone, which is why both options exist.

Can I rotate many images at once?

Yes. The same transformation is applied to every image in the list, and you can download them all as a ZIP.
